CANopen FD

CANopen FD is the successor of CANopen and it is specified in the CiA specification 1301, which has been released in September 2017. CANopen FD maintains the basic principles of CANopen, but the services are adopted to make full use of the faster and longer CAN FD messages, that may now have a length of up to 64 bytes and two different bit rates. An arbitration bit rate up to 1 Mbit/s and a data bit rate up to 8 Mbit/s. Additionally, the SDO service as been replaced by the more powerful USDA service which also supports broadcast and routing through multiple CANopen FD networks.

Performance comparison

The video (external Youtube Link) shows how the same amount of data is transferred in parallel with 4 different bit rates. This demonstration was realized using the CANopen FD Stack by emotas. Additionally, a special version of the CANopen DeviceExplorer was used to send the data in parallel.
